Powerwall 2 owners, here is some great news.

Thanks to Tesla’s latest software update, you can now add Powerwall 3 without replacing your existing system. This gives you the freedom to expand your battery storage when you need to, capture more solar energy, and save even more on your bills.

Previously, the two systems could not be installed together due to different electrical configurations, incompatible software and firmware, and different battery technology.

However, the new update allows you to add Powerwall 3 to Powerwall 2, giving you greater energy independence and more flexibility if your energy needs grow.

Powerwall 3 can now be installed with Powerwall 2 thanks to software update

According to Tesla, Powerwall 3 can now:

  • Integrate with Powerwall 2 in a shared energy system
  • Coordinate charging and discharging across both units
  • Support unified backup functionality
  • Operate under a single system controller

The supported configurations include up to:

  • Four Powerwall 2 units
  • One Powerwall 3 unit
  • Three Powerwall 3 expansion units

A Powerwall 3 expansion unit increases storage capacity while working alongside the main battery system.

  • Keep the hardware you already own: Thanks to the latest firmware, you can add Powerwall 3 to your existing setup rather than replace Powerwall 2.1
